Facial Recognition Software

The technology within facial recognition software has the potential for an extensive range of uses, far beyond just matching the facial features of people in a crowd to those of crooks in a database. Several airports have experimented with it to identify “people of interest” attempting to cross U.S. borders, but given that it’s a new technology that often provides false positives, facial recognition software hasn’t yet been widely adopted as a means toward that end. Even so, the United Kingdom reportedly has plans to electronically include facial biometrics in passports by 2009 to help curb identity theft. In addition, some manufacturers of portable devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, and PDAs (personal digital assistants), have been working on bundling facial recognition software with their products—the thought being that if your phone doesn’t recognize a user, it won’t work. That would increase the security of the device itself and make it a less attractive target for thieves. Facial recognition software also can be used instead of a pass code or security card to grant access to high-security facilities, such as nuclear reactors and bank vaults.
